The devil you know

Who do you believe? Minnesota Republican Senator Norm Coleman writes an op-ed about the UN meeting to determine how to wrest control of the Internet from the US.

Kofi Annan presents us his kindler, gentler view.

Decide for yourself; but I trust Kofi about as much as I trust Satan.

Update: More backstory here. (via Instapundit)

The need for change is a reflection of the future, when Internet growth will be most dramatic in developing countries. What we are seeing is the beginning of a dialogue between two different cultures: the nongovernmental Internet community, with its traditions of informal, bottom-up decision making, and the more formal, structured world of governments and intergovernmental organizations.

This a statement from the post by the UN Pres. and I am a little confused. Isn't a "bottom up decision making" a correct term of "government by the people"? Leads me to believe that some higher ups in so called "world wide internet development" want their grubby hands in the internet pie and probably for their own countries and or self interest

Yep, you're right. Also, I am certain all of the 3rd world dictatorships (along with China, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, etc) just want a say in the Internet so they can provide broad information access to help develop their suffering populations.

Give Internet control to the UN and half of the online freedom movements across the world will be destroyed through regulation and crackdowns in a matter of months.
