Laptop experiences, anyone?
My newest goal is raising around $3,200 cash for a new high-end gaming laptop. I've never used anything but desktops, but some changes in my life habits are making me think a laptop is finally right for me.
I'm hoping to get around $1,200 for my other Eve Online character and $1,000 from other random Ebay stuff; the rest will come out of my regular savings. With hope I'll have it in time for Christmas.
Anyone with any advice it would be greatly appreciated! I am looking at this Dell XPS Laptop. Looks nice with a 17" monitor and 512 meg video card; I'd upgrade it to 2gb RAM. I am also considering an Alienware (also now owned by Dell I think) laptop; it has an AMD processor, but I'm not really sure which is better, the AMD or Dual Core Intel chips. It's around the same price tricked out as the Dell is. It also looks like it might have a better wireless card, which will be beaucoup importante.
I think my honey is going to get a laptop too, as she is becoming slowly addicted to the box as a device to help with everyday things instead of something mean and scary. And neither of us are good at sharing.
Anyhoo, anyone with any thoughts to share, please drop me an email as I'm flying blind in the laptop department!

Hey T, I know someone who builds Computers, esp gaming computers. I'll find out if he builds Laptops. If so he could build it to your specs, and it will probably cost less. I'll let you know.

Yes, Dell does own AlienWare right now, making Dell laptops MUCH better (even though they were pretty good to begin with). I'd recommend waiting til after the new year to by anytype of computer (unless you want a mac *yuck* -my opinion). Vista will be coming out then and it's supposed to be really great... 64 bit and everything. Also, I'd recomment for your gaming laptop to have atleast 1 gig instead of a 512. At work, ive been pestering my boss to lemme upgrade my computer and he finally let me (see persistance pays off with nagging)! Its a dell nice one too, 64 bit. Were ordering on the 26th because thats when Vista comes out for corperations and we get coupons, should arrive on halloween...

Dude, Dell is a nightmare. Their products are crap, their warranties are bogus, and their tech support is one of the worst out there. Anyone who tells you to buy a dell really does not know what they are talking about. If you plan on upgrading your pc then the tech support will not even talk to you unless you get it back to the original factory settings as when they shipped it to you. I am not going to promote to you a brand here, but I have experience and knowledge in a couple and I will share the one that I have had the best luck with and the absolute best technical support with outside of this post if you wish.
You want a minimum of 1 gig RAM, and a minimum of 2.8 ghz processor. You can go up to 2 gigs of RAM with some noticable difference, but anything else might be overkill. The dual core is fantastic for running multiple applications. I can toggle in and out of a game with several programs running in the background with absolutley smooth runtime and transitions.
The video card is huge, and I think you have a firm grasp on what you want and need there.
So thats my 2 cents *ching, ching*. I hope it helps. Take it or leave it.

Rodney, I take offence to that. Sure Dells warrenty is crap and bogus. No one ever get's a warrenty who has a brain. Its a fools insurance. So your point on that is mute because last time I checked, Tobias is pretty intelligent. Second, I personally know that their tech support has gotten a lot better. They recently fired ALL of their preivious tech employees and replaced them with english speaking personnel. That was their biggest complant, and it got fixed. Theyve also hired I think 200 new employees that actually KNOW what they are talking about and can walk you through processes in upgrading your computer.
If you want to argue a point then sure, dont get a Dell, make yur own. Youll have much more hands on and will be more responcible with what goes in it. Dell is really good with people beacuse it cuts out all that WORK and does it for you. They ask you a few questions to let you personallize it, but other than that, they make buying a computer as easy as possible.
But for their products being crap, I resent that. Top of the line computers theyve released, they try and stay on top mainly for gamers.
You may have had some misfortune with Dell in the past and thats too bad. Sorry to hear that they got under your skin that bad. So when you say, "Anyone who tells you to buy a dell really does not know what they are talking about.", well I do...
Tobias, if you wish to buy a computer, the best brand to go with (if you do not wish to make your own) is a Dell, for sure. Id say Alienware, but Dell owns them. Followed by a Gateway (they have gotten a lot better watchout Dell!). The brand I strongly suggest you NOT get (fyi) is a Compaq (though i dont think you were even thinking of it.) Ill give you reasons why off line, my Post of Defending +2 is long enough.
Sorry Rodeny if I come on a little strong, but I worked a Dell for a few years, so I know what its like in there. My dad still works there and has since 1999 when Dell first opened in Nashville, so Im getting updates on whats going on in there. My friends have had a Dell for years now (four years I think maybe three) laptop and desktop and as far as I know, they havent had to call tech support and they play games on them and everything (mainly BF2). I could keep going...
Im sorry Dell is a good brand and to hear what you said made me go into my 1st of my two Rages I have per day.
Thats my Dollar, Rodney keep your change, this posts on me...

Hey Gribs,
Just so we're clear Rod does not = Rodney. Thats one of Tobias's other friends. I personally don't have a prefence to Brands of Computer. In my opinion, as long as it works its fine with me.
